Recognising the Alpine symbol

The mountain-and-snowflake symbol is a defined marking, not generic winter artwork.

Three peaks and a snowflake

The Alpine symbol is also called 3PMSF, from Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake. It shows a snowflake within a three-peaked mountain outline. Check the actual tyre marking. An isolated snowflake, decorative mountain or winter wording in a product name is not automatically the same symbol.

The marking indicates the relevant tested snow capability under the applicable regulation. It does not describe every characteristic on ice, wet roads or dry surfaces. Two marked tyres can still achieve different independent test results.

Its role in Germany

In the winter road conditions listed by Section 2(3a) StVO, ordinary passenger cars need the prescribed tyres. Section 36(4) StVZO includes the Alpine-marking requirement. Check the precise marking on winter and all-season offers rather than inferring compliance from a shop category.

M+S alone does not satisfy this current requirement. Earlier transitional arrangements should not be confused with today's position. An old guide or used-tyre listing may reflect an outdated understanding.

The symbol is not a complete shopping filter

Size, capacity, speed requirements and vehicle approval still matter. A correctly marked winter tyre can be the wrong dimension for your car. A different speed class needs separate assessment under the relevant conditions.

Within the suitable shortlist, compare available results for the required size. Wet-road performance remains relevant if rain occurs more often than snow in your driving. The Alpine marking is no reason to ignore those characteristics.

Check delivery and foreign requirements

Inspect the supplied tyre's marking, particularly where a shop uses a general model photograph. Keep the unambiguous item description. Resolve an unclear version before fitting.

Destination-country rules also matter when travelling abroad. The symbol alone does not establish every local obligation, such as snow-chain requirements on particular routes. Check those against the current itinerary and distinguish a product marking from an actual traffic requirement. A suitable tyre and compliance with a route-specific instruction are related but separate checks.

Check them before departure, not only when buying the tyres.
