Matching tyre and rim diameter

Tyre diameter must match the wheel exactly; similar numbers do not provide fitting flexibility.

The number after the construction letter

In a designation such as 205/55 R16, 16 gives the intended wheel diameter in inches. It is not the outside diameter of the whole inflated tyre. Sidewall height adds to the overall dimension. Measuring the complete wheel externally therefore produces another figure and should not lead to ordering a different size.

The tyre-to-wheel diameter must match exactly. Do not attempt to fit a similar-sized tyre to another wheel diameter. Fitting belongs with a properly equipped professional. Size markings do not describe a tolerance that can be overcome with more force.

Matching diameter is only the first step

Two wheels with the same diameter can differ in width, offset, attachment and load capacity. The tyre's permitted wheel-width range also matters. R16 therefore does not mean suitable for every 16-inch wheel. The combination must suit the vehicle and brakes as well.

A complete-wheel offer should identify tyre and wheel specifications separately. A vehicle photograph or general model filter does not replace those details. Ask for the associated approvals and conditions when a different combination is proposed.

Assess a diameter change as a package

Changing wheel diameter requires a corresponding approved tyre size. Width and aspect ratio may change, but cannot be selected arbitrarily. Sensors and other vehicle-specific requirements may also apply. Calculate the conversion with all necessary components and work included.

Retain documents for the combination actually fitted. At a later tyre replacement, these establish what belongs on the existing wheel without another guess from an unclear photograph. Check the delivery before fitting and resolve every discrepancy. Correct identification prevents a mistaken purchase long before brand or tread becomes the deciding question. If an inherited wheel set has no clear documentation, have its markings identified rather than assuming its current tyres prove the combination correct.

Label stored sets clearly with their complete specification and associated documents. Where a household has several cars, this helps avoid confusion between similar-looking wheels. A storage label still does not replace checking suitability and condition when the wheels are fitted again.
