Do not hang it like a complete wheel
Without a rim, there is no rigid wheel structure through which the tyre’s weight can be supported. Do not hang it from a hook through the opening. Localised loading can distort its shape. Manufacturers recommend upright storage for loose passenger-car tyres; follow additional instructions for the particular construction.
Use a clean, even support without sharp edges. Do not wedge the tyre between heavy objects. A narrow basement gap is unsuitable if it compresses the sidewall for months. The opening should not become a container for tools, screws or packing materials either.
Prepare and identify the set
Clean gently and dry fully. Check for embedded objects, cracking and unusual wear. Record size, model, previous use and condition before similar black rings are placed together. Identification is especially important for sets with different front and rear dimensions.
Do not leave a damaged tyre unmarked among serviceable ones. Resolve replacement or professional inspection before storage where possible. A clearly attached check-needed note is better than a memory that disappears over several months. Repair decisions should not silently pass to the next fitter.
Inspect the surroundings periodically
The location should be dry, shaded and free of harmful chemicals. Keep strong heat and potential ozone sources away. A cover can keep dirt off, but cannot replace a suitable room. Avoid trapping moisture inside it.
For extended storage, the manufacturer may recommend periodically changing the contact position. Use that opportunity to check whether the surroundings have changed. A leaking pipe or spilled substance can make a previously acceptable location unsuitable. Such checks are easier when the set remains accessible rather than buried behind heavy furniture.
Reassess before mounting
Later fitting requires a suitable wheel and professional equipment. Loose storage does not mean the tyre can be mounted without further checks on any wheel sharing its nominal diameter. Bead condition, size, rim width and approval belong together.
Tell the fitting business about known abnormalities and storage conditions. The tyre needs another examination before reuse. An old storage photograph can explain changes, but does not replace assessment of its current condition.
