Choosing motorhome tyres

Body type, axle loads and long periods parked make motorhome tyre selection a separate task.

Describe the completed vehicle first

A motorhome is more than the base vehicle whose badge appears on the front. Bodywork, furniture, tanks and accessories change its use compared with an empty van. Gather the documents for the completed registered vehicle and any information supplied by the conversion manufacturer. A recommendation for the original delivery van is not automatically a complete answer for the camper.

When seeking advice, describe the body type: a converted panel van, a low-profile body or a larger integrated motorhome. Include the wheel size actually fitted and all instructions about tyre construction. Photographs of markings are useful, but do not replace the vehicle documents. Later alterations to the conversion also need to be considered in the technical assessment.

Load is not shared equally

A large rear garage makes it tempting to place heavy items well behind the axle. Water, bicycles and additional batteries can also affect distribution. Total mass is only part of the issue; individual axle loads matter as well. Weighing the vehicle ready for a trip can answer questions that remain uncertain when catalogue weights are merely added together.

Record tank levels and the equipment carried when weighing, so the result can be interpreted later. Tyres must not be used to justify exceeding the vehicle's permitted loading. Even a version with a higher load index does not change the axle limits or maximum permitted vehicle mass.

C and CP are not arbitrary alternatives

Motorhome tyres may carry C or CP markings. CP identifies a construction intended for certain motorhome applications. Establish which version is specified for your vehicle through the approval and relevant manufacturers' guidance. Two tyres having the same nominal dimensions does not make them interchangeable for every body type.

Ask for the complete description of the proposed tyre. This helps prevent an apparently cheaper but differently specified version entering the order. Also establish whether particular valve requirements apply. If a technical question arises later, the precise article description is more useful than the product family's general name.

Make pressure advice traceable

Many blanket pressure recommendations circulate among motorhome owners. Do not choose a value simply because a forum suggests it for a similar vehicle. The correct instruction depends on the combination, loading and manufacturer requirements. Where a load-pressure table is used, its assumptions must match the actual application and measured loading.

Resolve conflicting information between the vehicle placard, conversion documents and tyre advice. Record the basis on which the confirmed pressures apply. This is particularly useful if another workshop later replaces the set. Check pressure in the specified cold conditions; readings after driving are taken under different conditions.

Plan parking and departure separately

A camper may stand for months and then cover thousands of kilometres in one trip. Low annual mileage therefore tells only part of its story. Monitor condition and age, and follow the vehicle and tyre instructions for prolonged parking. Deep tread alone does not prove that the structure is undamaged.

Schedule inspection well before a journey, rather than on departure morning. That leaves time for assessment of a suspect tyre or procurement of the correct replacement. Where fitted, check the spare and associated equipment too. A tyre on board is useful in an emergency only if it is suitable and serviceable.

Choose the season around the route

Finally consider the journeys you actually make: summer coastal trips, winter mountain roads or year-round travel to varied destinations. Seasonal suitability must match the route. CP lettering does not itself establish winter suitability. Check the relevant winter marking and the rules in destination countries separately.

Once those questions are resolved, compare complete quotations including fitting and necessary associated work. The general search for motorhome tyres becomes an order with a technical basis that can still be understood at the next replacement.
