Following the rotation arrow

The sidewall arrow identifies the intended rotation when travelling forwards.

Use the arrow rather than appearance

Directional tyres carry a marking, often an arrow with the word Rotation. It shows the intended rotation during forward travel. Do not rely only on the visual arrangement of grooves. A V-shaped pattern may be conspicuous, but the actual sidewall instruction is the clear reference.

The interpretation depends on the vehicle side. Moving a complete wheel across the car changes its rotation as viewed from that sidewall. This is why unrestricted wheel swapping can reverse the intended direction.

Consider it during seasonal changes

Label previous wheel positions clearly before storage. This helps at the next change but does not replace checking the arrows again. If tyres have been refitted to wheels, an old position mark cannot simply be accepted.

A front-to-rear swap on the same side may be possible under the vehicle instructions. Different axle sizes or other requirements can prevent it. A side-to-side change may require professional tyre remounting. Establish the actual combination rather than applying a universal cross-rotation pattern.

Do not confuse it with Inside and Outside

An inner-outer marking describes a different orientation from a rotation arrow. An asymmetric tyre need not look mirror-imaged across the vehicle. Read every instruction present and have unclear combinations identified by the fitter.

After installation, you can check visible markings and query a contradiction. This is a useful plausibility check, not a complete technical inspection. A correctly directed arrow does not establish pressure or wheel fastening, for example.

Resolve an incorrect arrangement

If the direction is clearly wrong, have the fitting assessed and corrected professionally. Do not treat a change in driving style as a permanent solution. The tread function is designed around its intended orientation.

Keep position notes and the complete tyre identification. This helps particularly with two similar seasonal sets. Clear records prevent errors more effectively than trying to remember earlier fitting from tread appearance alone. At handover, ask the workshop to explain any changed positions so the storage labels can be updated accurately.
