Speed rating and vehicle approval

A speed rating describes technical capability, not the permitted speed on a road.

The letter and its table value

The speed symbol follows the load index in the service description. In 91V, V corresponds to 240 kilometres per hour. It is not a suggested cruising speed or a promise applying to every tyre condition. Damage, incorrect pressure and overloading are not cancelled by a high rating.

The sequence cannot always be decoded simply by moving through the alphabet. Use a reliable table and the complete product information. Special markings or bracketed descriptions should be interpreted through manufacturer guidance.

Vehicle requirements determine selection

Check vehicle documents and any additional approvals. Do not select a lower rating merely because you intend to drive more slowly. Any exception depends on its legal and technical conditions. A personal speed limit does not replace that assessment.

Winter-capable tyres can be subject to particular provisions under specified conditions. These may involve visible speed information or appropriate limitation instructions. Have the actual application confirmed and observe the tyre's maximum speed. A generic winter description in a shop is insufficient.

Consider load and speed together

High-speed applications may introduce further conditions on permissible loading. The load index should therefore not be read independently of speed class in such cases. Have a specialist identify the application from technical data where these conditions concern your vehicle or selected version.

A higher rating does not automatically mean better wet braking either. That needs other evidence. Separate the suitability requirement from comparison of performance among products that meet it.

Check order and delivery

Similarly named variants can have different speed symbols. Check the basket and supplied tyres completely. Resolve an unexpected letter before fitting rather than after a long trip. Retain any confirmed deviation and the basis for it in your documents.

This keeps the reason for the fitment traceable. It is particularly helpful when replacing individual tyres later and a shop filter suggests only a similar version. The correct specification is more dependable than remembering that the last set had a generally high rating.
