Collecting a car after wheel fitting

Collection is a good moment to compare the order, the fitted wheels and the invoice. Questions are easiest to resolve while the car is still at the workshop.

Match the work to the order

Compare the tyre specification charged for with the one ordered. Size, model and any special markings should be identifiable. If only two tyres were replaced, establish which work was carried out on which wheels. Ask about a different specification before taking the car away. A vague assurance that it is approximately the same is insufficient.

Look over the accessible wheel faces with the workshop, particularly if existing damage was recorded on arrival. Establish where the old tyres, stored wheels and locking wheel-bolt key are. These small details are easier to resolve during handover than several days later.

Pressure and monitoring

Ask which pressures have been set and what loading condition they cover. The workshop should have used the vehicle-specific information. Mention an upcoming heavily loaded holiday journey explicitly. One standard figure supposedly suitable for every vehicle is not an adequate explanation.

Where relevant, ask about initialising or learning the tyre-pressure monitoring system. A warning still visible on the dashboard is an unresolved point and should not be dismissed as normal without explanation. Some systems require particular steps, which must suit your vehicle. Also note any instructions for a subsequent fastener check where one is prescribed.

The first drive is not a technical inspection

Drive attentively at first and avoid unnecessary demands on the vehicle. Report unusual noises, strong vibration or changed steering behaviour promptly. If the car feels unsafe, stop in a suitable safe place and seek guidance on how to proceed. You do not have to drive a long distance before a concern deserves attention.

Keep the invoice, date and odometer reading together. If a problem develops, describe the observation specifically without prematurely assigning blame. Saying that steering-wheel vibration began after collection is a useful starting point; an unverified diagnosis may divert attention from another cause. Finally, establish which tasks are complete and whether any further inspection should already be arranged. A clear handover leaves both parties with the same understanding of the work and any remaining steps.
