Using a temporary spare within its limits

A temporary spare has its own operating restrictions. It is an interim solution, not another ordinary tyre in the fitted set.

Identify it before use

Read the spare's marking and the vehicle handbook. Establish that it belongs to the vehicle or is specified for it. On a used car, a wheel simply being present in the boot does not prove compatibility. Size and distinctive colour alone do not answer that question.

Check its condition and specified pressure regularly before a puncture occurs. A temporary spare can sit unused for years while losing air or deteriorating. The required tools and locking wheel-bolt key must also be available. Preparation does not mean that changing a wheel yourself is safe at every breakdown location.

Fit only in suitable circumstances

The location must allow a safe procedure. Beside fast traffic, on unsuitable ground or with an unstable vehicle, assistance is preferable to improvisation. Follow the vehicle-specific fitting instructions. Universal torque values or lifting points cannot be inferred from the words temporary spare.

Some vehicles have particular instructions about wheel position or use on certain axles. Check these explicitly. If an additional step is required, do not omit it merely because the wheel appears to fit. Obtain professional clarification before continuing if the instructions remain uncertain.

Do not borrow another spare's limits

Speed, distance, load and other restrictions come from the applicable instructions. Do not automatically use a familiar figure from a different spare. The different wheel may also affect assistance systems or handling; read the relevant vehicle guidance.

Plan onward travel as a route to a suitable remedy rather than an unchanged continuation of a long holiday. Installing a temporary spare does not fully restore the original capability. New warnings or unusual behaviour still require attention. An uneventful first kilometre does not authorise unlimited further use.

Restore the normal arrangement

Have the damaged tyre professionally assessed and a suitable lasting solution fitted. Establish whether the spare needs checking or servicing after use, then secure it again as specified. Return used tools to their proper place as well.

Record the event briefly, particularly if several people drive the car. Nobody should discover only at the next puncture that the spare is missing or unusable. The temporary arrangement is fully closed only when both normal tyres and reserve equipment are again accounted for. Keep any restrictions visible while the spare remains fitted so that another driver cannot overlook them.
