Tyre storage services: clarify what is included

A tyre-storage service takes care of a set between uses. Establish which additional tasks are included before handing it over.

Identify the stored set

Have quantity, size and wheel specification recorded clearly. Complete wheels differ from four loose tyres. Note visible existing damage and ask whether the provider documents condition. A receipt linking the set to the customer and vehicle helps later collection and enquiries.

For households with several cars, a family name alone may not identify the sets sufficiently. Similar sizes and matching wheel colours can create confusion. If the vehicle changes, establish which set belongs to which car and whether it is suitable for the replacement vehicle at all.

Storage is not automatically maintenance

Ask whether cleaning, condition assessment and tread-depth records are included. Some offers add these services while others cover storage alone. A wheel is not serviced merely by standing on a rack. A visual check also does not promise that every internal defect has been excluded.

Establish how the business will tell you if replacement is needed. Early notice allows ordering and appointment planning. Discovering an unsuitable tyre only at the next changeover may delay use of the car. Agree a clear communication process without giving unlimited authorisation for extra spending.

Price, period and access

Check the period covered and how renewal or cancellation works. Ask about relevant charges for collection, early release or transfer to another location. An inexpensive seasonal price may look different if you subsequently change workshop.

Availability matters too. A set kept away from the fitting premises may need to be requested in advance. Resolve this before travel or a short-notice vehicle sale. Arriving unexpectedly does not necessarily mean the wheels can immediately be loaded into the boot.

Return and refitting

Compare the returned set with the receipt and look for visible changes. Raise concerns at handover. Pressure, condition and suitability need consideration again before installation. Appropriate storage does not replace the check before the next use.

Keep storage receipts and relevant messages until the complete set is returned. If a discrepancy arises, precise details of the set, dates and recorded condition are more useful than a general memory of leaving four wheels. The agreement need not be complicated, but it should explain what is stored, which services are included and how you regain access to the items. Give those details to anyone collecting on your behalf so that the return can be checked against the same record.
