Checking bolt pattern and bolt count

Five fixing holes do not make two wheels interchangeable. The diameter of their bolt circle is part of the specification.

What 5 × 112 describes

In the designation 5 × 112, the first number means five fixing holes. The second is the diameter of the imaginary circle passing through their centres: 112 millimetres in this example. It is neither the distance between adjacent holes nor the diameter of one hole. Confusing those measurements makes a quick estimate from an advertisement photograph unreliable.

Counting the holes is usually straightforward. The bolt-circle diameter should instead be taken from unambiguous wheel identification and its technical data. With an odd number of holes, there is no second hole directly opposite the first. A ruler laid across them does not automatically provide the required diameter. An approximate measurement is not enough for a purchase decision.

Similar is not a matching specification

Markings such as 5 × 112 and 5 × 114.3 describe different bolt circles. Their small visual difference must not be treated as an installation tolerance. Do not force a wheel into position by tightening it or assume arbitrary alternative bolts make it suitable. Specified adapter or special-fastener systems are separate engineered arrangements with defined components and conditions, not general permission to improvise.

Even an exact bolt-circle match does not approve the whole wheel. Centre bore, offset, size, fastening seat, load capacity and clearance still need checking. When comparing offers, make bolt pattern one row among several. This avoids turning a matching individual feature into an unsupported claim that the wheel fits the car.

Order the correct version

A wheel design may be available with several bolt patterns. Check the selected version when ordering, not just the main photograph. Include the specific article or wheel number in an enquiry to the seller. Saving a screenshot of the full selection can help if the shop later returns to a default version.

For used wheels, obtain readable identification from every item. A set advertised together may contain different versions. If the manufacturer's data and the markings cannot be matched clearly, resolve the discrepancy with the manufacturer or a tyre workshop before fitting. That keeps an apparently simple question about hole count from becoming a problem only when the car has already been lifted.
